Conestoga graduate Girish Bhuteja has received international recognition for his contributions to open education and efforts to make learning more accessible for students.
Bhuteja was named a 2026 Open Education Award for Excellence winner by Open Education Global (OEGlobal) in the Student Leader and Champion for Open Education category. The international awards recognize outstanding contributions that advance openness, access and innovation in education.
Bhuteja recently graduated with distinction from Conestoga’s Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) program. During his studies, he worked with the college’s Open Learning team in Library and Learning Services as an Open Educational Resources (OER) Projects Assistant, holding both part-time and full-time co-op positions with the team.
“Being named one of four 2026 Individual Award recipients worldwide by Open Education Global means a great deal to me,” Bhuteja said. “When I joined Conestoga’s Open Learning team, I was focused on solving the problems in front of us and making learning resources work better for students. I never imagined that work would receive international recognition.”
In his role with Open Learning, Bhuteja helped develop and improve open educational resources while bringing a student perspective to the process. He worked with the team to address functionality and accessibility challenges and improve the experience for students using the resources.
His work contributed to accessible digital learning resources used by more than 1,000 students and involved HTML, CSS, Pressbooks, H5P, WordPress, accessibility testing, workflow automation and data visualization.
“More than any single deliverable, I am proud that I learned how to take an unclear need and turn it into something useful for students and educators,” Bhuteja said.
Open educational resources are openly licensed teaching and learning materials that can be accessed, adapted and shared. At Conestoga, Bhuteja also helped raise awareness of OER through information booths and outreach activities. He facilitated a student survey to better understand students’ awareness of OER and their needs, analyzed the findings and developed visuals to support advocacy efforts. His contributions supported the successful acquisition of a grant to sustain and expand OER development at the college.
“As a student, I have seen how cost and accessibility can determine whether someone is able to participate fully in their education,” Bhuteja said. “A resource can contain excellent information, but its value is lost if a student cannot afford it or cannot use it with the technology and accommodations they rely on. Access includes both affordability and usability.”
Bhuteja’s commitment to creating opportunities for students extended beyond his work with Open Learning. Through campus leadership, he helped organize initiatives including Elevate Expo, Growth Summit and AI Hackathons, creating opportunities for students to engage with industry professionals, build confidence and learn about career pathways.
Reviewers for the Open Education Awards highlighted Bhuteja’s technical expertise, empathy, curiosity and commitment to community, as well as his ability to put the principles of collaboration and openness into practice.
Bhuteja said the experience he gained at Conestoga has prepared him to pursue a professional role in software development, applied AI and data, or business systems analysis.
“Conestoga gave me more than technical knowledge,” Bhuteja said. “Through my coursework, capstone project, work with the Open Learning team, and campus leadership, I learned how to understand an unfamiliar problem, communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and carry an idea through implementation and testing.”
The Open Education Awards for Excellence recognize achievements in open education around the world and celebrate the people, resources and practices helping expand access to education.
