Student projects from 11 programs across the schools of Engineering & Technology and Applied Computer Science & Information Technology were on display at Tech Showcase to determine the recipients of the college’s Mastercraft Award.

Hosted at the Waterloo campus on August 27, the biannual event features best-of-program final-term projects. Students were on hand to demonstrate and explain their work to a panel of industry representatives who judged based on innovation, creativity, skill and quality.
Mechanical Engineering Technician - Automated Manufacturing student Gavin DeBoer received top honour in Engineering & Technology for a smart, load-sensitive system that improves the performance and safety of heavy-duty trailer operations. The project, titled Smart Load Equipment, utilizes real-time weight-distribution monitoring and adjustment to help reduce mechanical stress, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance overall operational safety.
Students Saba Berenji, Owen Covach, Sudhan Dahake and Sierra Erb in the Bachelor of Computer Science program were awarded top honour in Applied Computer Science & Information Technology for their project, R.A.T.E., in which they partnered with Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto to develop a training and evaluation platform for fertility clinic technicians. The system supports competency assessment in sperm motility and embryo viability analysis, helping improve training outcomes in diagnostic consistency. As aspiring entrepreneurs, the team is exploring pathways to transform their innovation into a widely adopted industry tool.
With their top honours, both projects will be presented with Conestoga’s Mastercraft Award at their Convocation ceremony. Established in 1980 by former president Kenneth E. Hunter, the award recognizes excellence in program-related skills and includes a Coat of Arms and monetary prize.
