Students in Conestoga’s School of Computer Science & Information Technology were invited to attend a Women in EngTech Mixer at the Waterloo campus esports lounge.

The Women in EngTech Mixer held at the Waterloo campus esports lounge welcomed students in Conestoga’s School of Computer Science & Information Technology, including Drasti Patel and Jiya Pandit.

The drop-in event held recently invited female, trans and non-binary students in academic programs, campuses or schools where they may be underrepresented to network and support each other, along with allies. The esports team was also onsite to welcome people into the state-of-the-art gaming space.

These mixers are held as part of Engineering, Technology and Trades for Women (ETT4W), an initiative started at Conestoga to foster women’s participation and success in engineering, technology and trades through educational programs, outreach and events, and student supports.

Drasti Patel attended the event with friend Jiya Pandit, both in the four-year Bachelor of Computer Science degree program. They found the event a fantastic opportunity to connect with other women who share similar ambitions in engineering and technology.

“I found it inspiring to meet others who understand the unique challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in these fields. The event encouraged conversations that went beyond professional networking. Many of us bonded over shared experiences and even found potential friendships that we’re excited to develop further,” Patel said.

What stood out most to her was the supportive and welcoming environment created.

“Having a space to discuss both academic and career paths with peers and mentors in a casual setting was incredibly empowering. It’s rare to find a venue that promotes networking, mentorship and camaraderie all in one,” Patel said.

As well, they appreciated learning about the many resources, programs and recreational activities the college hosts that she hadn’t known about. “It was a reminder of the opportunities available right here on campus.”

Maísa Wolff Resplande, a student in the Software Engineering Technology program, was very excited to join the event as an advocate for women in tech who understand initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion are needed and valuable for students.

“This event creates a safe and empowering space for us to share our experiences, connect with like-minded individuals, and reminds us that we are not alone in this journey. For me, it serves as a powerful inspiration to keep breaking barriers, reminding me that we have a strong network of support and that, together, we can create a more inclusive environment for women,” Wolff Resplande said.

A fun added feature of the mixer was being able to play games in the esports hub, she said. Best of all, Wolff Resplande made a new friend who she meets up with to game or enjoy a meal together.

“I appreciate that ETT4W put this together and look forward to attending the following events.”

Jacqueline Smith, program manager in the School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology, said these events continue to provide engaging space for students to be further inspired to pursue their engineering, technology and trades passion in Conestoga’s state-of-the-art facilities such as the Condors Esports Hub.

Conestoga has been committed to fostering and enhancing women's participation, persistence, and academic and career success in engineering, technology and trades since 1977.
