Bags packed with fresh fruits and vegetables at a discounted price are available through Conestoga Students Inc. (CSI) in an effort to support the nutrition, health and wellness needs of students and help cultivate a healthy relationship with food.
Students can access fresh produce at a discounted price at markets hosted by CSI.
The Affordable Produce Program is an on-campus market where students can buy already assembled bags of assorted produce provided through a partnership with Quality Box Produce. CSI, the official student association, subsidizes a $5 discount on purchases of $10 or more.
Market days are held regularly on Conestoga campuses from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the schedule posted on the association’s website.
“When students have access to healthy and nutritious food, they’re better able to focus and thrive during their academic journey at Conestoga,” said CSI president Nelson Chukwuma. “The Affordable Produce Program is a part of holistic programming to support the Condor community in a sustainable way and help support students’ personal and academic well-being.”
CSI has been supporting Conestoga students with food programs for more than two decades. The campus markets are part of the Student Nutrition Access Program (SNAP), aimed at making it easy for Conestoga students to access healthy food.
The association ran a traditional food bank for more than 20 years before shifting to an emergency food funding model during the pandemic, providing students with greater access to foods that suit their dietary needs and preferences.
Complimentary fruit has been handed out at CSI service hubs for about a decade. The Nourish & Go Program launched in fall 2023, adding free snacks to the selection.
That’s also when the Affordable Produce Program launched.
Upcoming campus markets are scheduled for July 17 and August 1. Produce bags at a recent market included raspberries, corn, sweet peppers, cucumber and onion.
The market is affordable and handy for busy students, making it easier to have a balanced diet.
“With classes, assignments, jobs, and other commitments, post-secondary students can often have little time for activities like grocery shopping,” Chukwuma said. “These markets are a convenient stop between classes that meet students where they are.”
As the college’s official student association, CSI represents the interests of students across all Conestoga campuses. Support services focus on leadership and career development, academics, and health and wellness.
