Conestoga College gets "heavy" with operator program
Less than six months ago, Melissa Anderson was dressed in business clothes in her position as an executive assistant at the University of Waterloo. Now she is wearing a hard hat and safety boots and learning how to operate heavy equipment.
"I was in administration for 25 years and liked my job. But I felt it was time for a career change," says the 43-year-old, an apprentice in Conestoga College's Heavy Equipment Operator program.
The program's objective is to provide students with a combination of training in core heavy equipment operator skills as well as trade related skills such as mathematics, computer applications and communications, says Brenda Gilmore, program manager of the college's school of trades and apprenticeship.
