Tenth Golf Classic Raises Funds to Advance Conestoga's Development

More than 140 business and community leaders joined tournament honouree John Pollock and Conestoga President John Tibbits for the 10th annual Conestoga Golf Classic at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg, Ont., on May 30. The outcome was one of the most successful in the event's history.

This year's event has raised approximately $60,000 to be used towards Conestoga's planned expansion of facilities and programs in Waterloo. Central to these plans is the goal of acquiring the property formerly occupied by University Heights Secondary School. This acquisition will give Conestoga a much larger facility in the city, allowing for expansion of existing full-time and part-time courses and programs now offered at its King St. N. location, as well as providing the opportunity for the introduction of new skills-related programming.

The Conestoga Golf Classic has two aims - to recognize an outstanding, successful, forward-looking community business or industrial leader and to raise funds to advance Conestoga's mandate of providing practical education which contributes directly to economic growth and prosperity. Funds are used for purposes such as scholarships, student computer labs, instructional equipment, specialized learning facilities, and development of academic curriculum and programs.

John Pollock is a well-known and highly respected member of the community. He is Chairman, President and CEO of Kitchener-based Electrohome Ltd., a firm founded by Arthur Pollock nearly a century ago. Electrohome has evolved from a manufacturer of phonographs, radios, televisions and furniture into an enterprise that is involved with the development, assembly and marketing of products and services that facilitate visual communications for a global customer base.

Mr. Pollock also has a long record of community service. In addition to participation on a number of corporate boards, he has been an active board member with organizations as diverse as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Cambridge Memorial Hospital, the Grand Valley Conservation Foundation, the Trillium Foundation, the Science Council of Canada, the University of Waterloo and Junior Achievement of Waterloo Region.

Since its inception, the Golf Classic has raised more than $450,000 in total for Conestoga.
