New renovation projects at Conestoga will transform existing classrooms into Indigenous-inspired learning spaces. The classrooms will be located at the Doon campus in Kitchener (Room 2A145) and the new Conestoga Skilled Trades Campus in Cambridge (Room 2030). When complete, the classrooms will provide an inclusive and culturally rich educational experience for students.
“These renovations reflect our commitment to fostering a learning environment that recognizes and honours Indigenous culture,” said Tim Schill, vice president, Facilities & Capital Development. “We are excited to provide students and faculty with spaces that enhance both the educational experience and cultural understanding.”
The new Indigenous-inspired classrooms are designed to integrate native materials and offer a flexible space for learning. The moveable desks and chairs will allow for various configurations, supporting diverse teaching and learning styles.
One of the standout features of the rooms is the intricate circular wood ceiling, which incorporates the four colours that represent the cardinal directions: North, South, East and West. Additionally, the classrooms are being equipped with advanced exhaust systems to allow for traditional smudging ceremonies, making them respectful and reflective of Indigenous traditions.
While the specific programs utilizing these classrooms are still being determined, the classroom at the Skilled Trades Campus in Cambridge will likely be used by faculty and students enrolled in Conestoga’s skilled trades programs.
“Attracting diverse talent to the skilled trades is crucial for growth and innovation within industry,” said Suzanne Moyer, dean, School of Trades & Apprenticeship. “By creating culturally inclusive spaces, we not only enhance the learning experience, but also appeal to a broader range of students, helping them envision successful careers in the skilled trades.”
The cost of the renovations is approximately $900,000. Classrooms are expected to be complete by October 11, 2024.
The classroom renovations represent Phase One of a larger project that will see more Indigenous-inspired elements incorporated into Conestoga’s learning spaces. Phase 2 of the Indigenous Classroom Project includes the creation of a large gathering circle between the two Skilled Trades Campus buildings. The first building opened its doors to students in 2022. The second building, a 220,000 square foot facility which will be home to a variety of skilled trades programs, is set to open in September 2026.
Conestoga has engaged Indigenous artist Jackie Traverse to design the soffit and fascia elements of the gathering circle structure, which is expected to be complete when the second phase of the new Skilled Trades Campus opens.
