Conestoga adds virtual fun to Lumen Festival in Waterloo

Conestoga helped light up the popular Lumen Festival in Waterloo as both a sponsor and participant.

The School of Creative Industries attracted a long line of people wanting to try out two virtual reality headsets at the light festival held on September 21 across the city’s core in the town square and park.

“The Lumen Festival is a remarkable celebration of the fusion between art and technology. Our dedicated faculty and staff had meaningful interactions with attendees of all ages, highlighting the importance of creativity technology,” said Pejman Salehi, executive dean of the School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology and School of Creative Industries.

Lumen, now in its seventh year, bills itself as the festival “where light, art and tech meet.” This year’s event included more than 30 installations and more than 50 artists.

“Supporting the Lumen Festival aligns perfectly with our mission at the School of Creative Industries. It provides a platform to raise awareness about our diverse programs and the intersectionality of creativity and technology,” Salehi said. “We are thrilled to contribute to such a vibrant community event and look forward to continuing our engagement in future editions.”

Along with offering the virtual-reality experience where people were immersed in a fast-paced and colourful game, the college also had a photobooth with balloons and a glittery backdrop. About 500 people came through the Conestoga booth last year.

Mayor Dorothy McCabe appreciated the college’s sponsorship of the event that attracts huge crowds to Waterloo’s uptown. “It’s also a very good opportunity to demonstrate the types of programs that Conestoga is offering.”

And it’s a good reminder that the college has a thriving presence in the city.

“Conestoga has been such a mainstay in Kitchener that it’s good to demonstrate they have a growing campus in Waterloo,” McCabe said.

Conestoga’s School of Creative Industries offers dynamic programs spanning all aspects of media, communication and design. Students can pursue a career as a game designer, interactive designer, podcaster, community relations specialist, eRetail visual designer, interior decorator, multimedia editor, camera operator, 3D animator, graphic designer, media coordinator, social media analyst, motion graphics artist, reporter, event marketing specialist and more.
