Conestoga marketing students secured a second-place win at the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition, hosted by Georgian College November 16 and 17.
The win marks another strong OCMC showing for Conestoga, whose teams have previously captured gold as well as several top-three finishes at the event. The competition has been drawing the top marketing students from colleges across the province for decades.
“After months of preparation, our Conestoga marketing students achieved an exciting second-place overall finish at the OCMC,” said Jennifer White, professor, School of Business. “None of this would be possible without our passionate faculty coaches, who aim to create an experience that will propel our students to great heights in their future endeavours. I couldn’t be prouder to have had the opportunity to work with such an incredible group of students and faculty.”
The OCMC challenges competitors to present pitches to a panel of judges on several marketing subjects. Topics range from entrepreneurship to integrated marketing communications and international marketing. There is also a mock job interview competition, as well as a quiz tournament.
Students are judged on their ability to quickly analyze a problem, and on their presentation skills for outlining a comprehensive marketing strategy and solution. The judges include marketing professionals from prospective employers and event sponsors.
Participating in 12 categories, the Conestoga team earned several awards towards placing second overall among the 14 colleges taking part.
Conestoga winners:
- 1st place - Marketing Research: Sebastian Niemec & Macy Stewart
- 2nd place - Advanced Marketing Strategy: Edward Han & Mikah Garcia
- 2nd place - International Marketing: Peter Fridge & Rashid Mohamud
- 2nd place - Marketing: Tyler Wicks & Jack Miller
- 2nd place - Integrated Marketing Communications: Macy Stewart & Abigail Ertel
Also representing Conestoga were Mikayla Scholten, Mackenzi Whalen, Matt Wideman, David Zen, Braxten Breen, Spencer Lahey, Pelin Gundogdu, Colin O’hagan, and Aziz Khasanbaev. The students were joined by 12 Conestoga marketing faculty coaches.
Conestoga’s team was selected from a tryout process that began in September during the first weeks of the school term. Participants then studied with their coaches weekly in preparation for the OCMC in November.
“I was thrilled to join the marketing faculty and students at OCMC 2023,” said Jamie Wiebe, chair, School of Business. “The team's success illustrates the strength of our marking diploma programs. Thanks to the dedicated faculty coaches, our students achieved impressive results. We are excited for what 2024 has in store.”
Conestoga’s School of Business provides numerous opportunities and pathways to complete, specialize or expand business education through full- or part-time studies. The school offers a variety of marketing programs that focus on the fundamental principles of marketing and give graduates hands-on skills to gain employment in the industry.
