Students and colleagues commend her compassion and describe her as someone who consistently demonstrates fairness, integrity and care when interacting with the college community, even during the most challenging times.

During the pandemic, Dr. Hagerman developed her technology expertise to design innovative and engaging learning opportunities for in-person and virtual learning environments. She organized information sessions to help students prepare for licensing examinations and post-graduation job searches and continues to be strongly invested in the success of her students as they prepare for future careers and transition to professional practice.

Dr. Hagerman holds multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Nursing Science, a Master of Science in Nursing, a Master of Business Administration, and a Doctor of Education in Higher Education. She has authored many research papers and serves on several local and provincial committees. In addition, her work on a Mindful Self Compassion project has resulted in the creation of a model for faculty teaching practices that will help students and graduates become compassionate care providers.

Dr. Hagerman was presented the award during the college’s 2022 fall convocation celebration, which ran from October 30 to November 4, joining an esteemed group built over a more than thirty-year tradition of recognizing and celebrating outstanding contributions to teaching excellence at Conestoga.

Established in 1988, the Aubrey Hagar Distinguished Teaching Award is named in honour of respected teacher, mentor and innovator Aubrey Hagar, who fostered the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning. A member of the college’s founding Board of Governors, he went on to provide leadership to the college for more than 20 years in roles that included Director of Academic and College Planning as well as Director of Strategic Planning.

Candidates for the annual award are nominated by their students and peers and evaluated by a selection committee based on their outstanding contributions in the areas of learning design, innovation and creativity, integrity and professionalism, promotion of quality in education, concern and sensitivity for students, and ambassadorship for the college.
