As the Conestoga community continues to learn and work from home in adherence with Public Health guidelines, the college’s Athletics and Recreation department is taking extra steps to support the physical and mental well-being of students and employees.
Conestoga’s Athletics and Recreation department will support physical and mental well-being through virtual fitness classes, at-home workout routines and wellness tips.
Beginning March 31, the department will host a series of virtual fitness classes through Instagram Live in an effort to help the community stay active, as well as relieve stress.
“The last two weeks have been full of many changes as we all continue to transition and adjust to new ways of living, working and learning,” said Andrew Bates, manager, Athletics and Recreation. “Our hope is to engage the Conestoga community in wellness practices to promote and support positive habits during this unprecedented time.”
Classes will be facilitated by Alyssa Smith, a yoga instructor at the Student Recreation Centre and a Bachelor of Business Administration - International Business Management student. Workouts will feature a variety of exercises designed to increase physical and mental strength, including beginner’s yoga and Pilates.
In addition to virtual fitness classes, the department will also engage the college community through a campaign aimed at promoting health and wellness. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed new stress on individuals and families as they respond to challenges around the rapidly evolving situation. Region of Waterloo Public Health and Emergency Services suggests managing that stress by eating well, being active indoors and getting plenty of sleep. Athletics and Recreation will be sharing at-home workout routines, wellness tips and nutrition advice through social media.
