Students in Conestoga’s one-year Design Foundations certificate program hosted the sixth annual Skillz Manifesto on April 8 at the Waterloo Region Museum. The year-end show highlighted the work of nearly 60 students.
Design Foundations students showcased a collection of their work at Skillz Manifesto, held April 8 at the Waterloo Region Museum. The event also featured a canvas raffle and print sale.
Guests were invited to browse the student gallery which included self-portraits, photography, illustrations, prints and abstracts featuring a number of different materials, mediums and themes. The show also offered a canvas raffle and print sale and guests were invited to sit for caricature sketches.
Program faculty member Ariane Wieck described Design Foundations as a portfolio-building program that prepares students for a number of career options in the fields of design and communications. The program features courses in the principles and history of design, idea development, research, presentation skills, portfolio development, drawing, colour theory and printing technology. Upon completion of the program graduates tend to explore Conestoga's Graphic Design or Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma programs or pursue the Bachelor of Design.
Design Foundations student Carlos Ramirez served as a master of ceremony for the event and said he was pleased with the turnout and the feedback. “People have come up to me to say they like my work and it really means a lot that my art is recognized.” Ramirez plans to build upon the skills he acquired in Design Foundations and pursue a career in advertising.
During the event, nine students were honoured for their achievements with the following program awards:

- Creative Material Award: Nathan Schuster
- Away From Home Award: Qing Liu
- History Award: Rosemarie Miles
- Personal Achievement Award: Essay Michael
- Drawing Award: Megan Meagher
- Design & Promotion Award: Haven Dao
- Creative Process Award: Blair Corbett
