On Tuesday, April 28, Cambridge City Council voted to move forward with negotiations for a partnership with Conestoga for the construction and operation of a community multi-purpose sport and recreation complex.
Under the proposed agreement, the new sportsplex will be located on land at Conestoga’s Fountain Street campus in Cambridge, directly adjacent to the 401 highway.
In an editorial published in the Waterloo Region Record, Councillor Frank Monteiro, chair of the Task Force for the project, pointed out that the proposal presents a “unique and rare opportunity” for the city to access available, serviced land within budget and partner with Conestoga. The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce expressed their support for the proposal based on a survey of their members.
The city and the college will now work on the development of a Memorandum of Understanding as the first step towards a formal partnership agreement.
