Conestoga's men's soccer team has earned a spot in the provincial championships thanks to a 2-1 win over La Cité collégiale in Ottawa this past weekend.
The Condors headed into the quarterfinal matchup with a 4-3-1 record and a third-place standing in the West division. The Ottawa-based La Cité team’s record of 5-0-2 gave them second place in the East division.
Conestoga took the lead 27 minutes into the match thanks to a goal by Osman Osmasoy. Although La Cité’s Jose Bruno Mota, the league’s leading goal scorer, had a great chance in the first half, Condors’ goalkeeper Vlado Jovici made a superb save to hold the game at 1-0 at half time. Sasa Radosevic added an insurance goal for the Condors in the 65th minute, bringing the score to 2-0.La Cité pulled within one after a scramble in the Condors’ Penalty Area at the 80th minute. The remainder of the game was played in in the Condors’ half of the field, but Conestoga defended very well to keep the score at 2-1.
The team will now head to the OCAA Provincial Championships to be held at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan from October 27 to 29. Their first game is scheduled for Friday, October 28 at 3:00pm against Humber College, winners of the West Division and third-ranked team in the country. Depending on the results of the first game, Conestoga will go on to face either Sheridan College or St. Clair College on Saturday in either the Gold or Bronze Medal Match.
