Governments and employers are focusing on the important economic role and the many opportunities apprenticeship education offers to young Ontarians.
Conestoga College is one of the province's largest and most forward-looking providers of college-based apprenticeship programs. Starting this spring, Conestoga will offer in Waterloo a pre-apprenticeship program that can open a practical path to an important, rewarding skilled trade career.
The tuition-free Plumber Pre-Apprenticeship program is funded by the Government of Ontario.
The program is scheduled to begin on March 22. This daytime program features 32 weeks of on-campus learning, plus eight weeks of work placement experience. Among the areas where students will gain knowledge and skills are plumbing codes, trade documentation, plumbing theory, plumbing-related math, welding, health and safety, employment strategies and workplace communications.
Application for this program is open to those age 16 or older, and no longer a secondary school student. Completion of Grade 12 is preferred, but not mandatory, because academic upgrading assistance will be provided. Note that only 24 enrollment spaces are available in Plumber Pre-Apprenticeship.
All prospective applicants must first attend a two-hour information session. These sessions are free of charge and will take place at the following locations and dates: at the Conestoga campus in Waterloo on January 27 (2 p.m.), February 3 (5 p.m.), February 10 (2 p.m.), February 17 (5 p.m.) and February 24 (2 p.m.); at the Conestoga campus in Guelph on February 8 (5 p.m.) and February 22 (2 p.m.).
