Conestoga Technology Students Best University Competitors in IEEE Event

A team of three technology students from Conestoga College took top honours on March 7 at the annual Student Papers Night competition, held at the University of Waterloo's Davis Centre and sponsored by the Kitchener-Waterloo Section of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE).

IEEE is an international professional organization that promotes the engineering process in the fields of electro and information technologies and sciences.

The purpose of the event is to showcase excellence and innovation in electronic design and research at the undergraduate level.

The team of Scott Charron, Matthew Loschmann and Lauren Weber were chosen winners for the best overall presentation in the competition, which involved teams from Conestoga and the University of Waterloo.

Their presentation described the design and development of their comprehensive, final-year project at Conestoga -- a home security alarm system that can be monitored, activated or deactivated over the Internet or from a numeric keypad, employing wireless technology.

The presentations by the competing teams consisted of documentation, oral presentations, plus responses to questions posed by the judges. On the judging panel were University of Waterloo electrical engineering professors and a doctoral candidate in the field from Waterloo.

Charron is a Kitchener resident and a graduate of Resurrection Catholic Secondary School. Loschmann resides in Bright and graduated from Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School. Weber, who lives in Waterloo, is a graduate of Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School. Charron and Loschmann are in the final year of the three-year Computer Engineering Technology program at the Doon campus in Kitchener, while Weber is in his final year of study in the three-year Electronics Engineering Technology - Telecommunications program.

In all, three student teams from each institution took part in the event. Conestoga has won four of the past five annual competitions.
