New online tool connects students with employers

Students at Conestoga now have access to an innovative networking platform designed to connect employers with qualified candidates.

The Magnet network, co-founded by Ryerson University and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce with support from the Government of Ontario, is an online matchmaking service for employers and job seekers. Officially launched on September 24, the network includes 18 colleges and universities across the province and more than 60,000 employers.

“Helping graduates find meaningful careers is a top priority for Ontario’s colleges,” said Linda Franklin, president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “This innovative and resourceful tool allows students to make the essential connections needed in this competitive marketplace.”

Driven by WhoPlus You technology developed at Ryerson, Magnet is designed to connect jobs to people and enhance overall productivity in our communities. By logging in to conestogacollege.magnet.today, students can create a detailed, personalized profile that highlights their skills and qualifications. Employers use the same platform to submit job descriptions, and the Magnet technology matches individuals with suitable opportunities.

There is no charge for job-seekers to register for the service. Employers will save time, money and effort in sourcing qualified candidates to meet their recruitment needs.

“Ontario’s employers are telling us that they’re finding it difficult to connect with workers who have the skills they need,” said Alan O’Dette, president and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “Magnet is not only going to address this barrier by connecting businesses with the right candidates, but will also create youth employment opportunities across the province.”

The Government of Ontario has invested almost $1.2 million to help expand Magnet to the province’s postsecondary institutions. To date, more than 25,000 jobseekers have created profiles, generating more than 40,000 invitations for job-seekers and employers to connect.
