Babcock & Wilcox Scholarships Go to Outstanding Tech Students

Two Conestoga mechanical engineering technology students have each earned a $1,875 scholarship from Babcock & Wilcox Canada for their academic accomplishments, demonstrated leadership and contribution to college life.

The honours go to Jeremy Allen of Kitchener and Derek Goetz of Elmira. Both are enrolled in diploma programs that feature co-op education - Allen in Mechanical Engineering Technology - Design and Analysis, and Goetz in Mechanical Engineering Technology - Robotics and Automation.

Babcock & Wilcox Canada presents two scholarships each year at Conestoga, to promote excellence and achievement in advanced technology studies aligned with its activities as Canada's largest manufacturer of fossil and nuclear steam generation systems, environmental-emissions technology and services for the electric power, pulp and paper and industrial markets.

Because both winners are co-operative education students, the company will extend to them the offer of employment for the period of their third program-related co-op education work term. The cash portion of the award will go to the students upon their registration in September.

The Design and Analysis option focuses on production processes that illustrate the integration of design and manufacturing. Graduates successfully find employment in areas such as computer-aided design operations, research and development, technical sales and marketing, and advanced technology equipment installation and testing.

Robotics and Automation centres around creation and control of automated manufacturing processes involving electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers and computer-aided operations. Graduates typically go on to careers in automation programming and maintenance, fluid power automation, advanced technology equipment design and maintenance, and automation and robotics marketing.
