The Respect Campaign and Library Resource Centre Bring Exciting "Human Library" Event to Conestoga
Conestoga's Respect Campaign is partnering with the Library Resource Centre (LRC) to host a new and exciting event during the annual Respect Week.
On Tuesday February 28, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Conestoga's first-ever Human Library is coming to the LRC. This interactive event gives students the opportunity to challenge assumptions and stereotypes by engaging in real-time conversations with "Human Books."
Students have the chance to ask questions, challenge their assumptions and gain knowledge and understanding of the various demographics within the college community by "borrowing" a "Human Book".
The "Human Books" are volunteers representing specific demographics. By having the opportunity to speak about their experiences, both students and the "Human Books" alike will be able to promote acceptance, celebrate differences and encourage understanding of people who come from varied cultural or lifestyle backgrounds.
Examples of "Human Books" students may borrow include:
• Aboriginal and International students
• Students with physical, learning and developmental Disabilities
• Cancer survivor
• Female police officer in a non-traditional field
• Crown Ward and first generation students
• Single parents
• Gay and transgendered individuals
And more!
Register Now to Attend
Students interested in attending the event and being a "book borrower" are invited to register in advance by completing the online registration form by Friday February 24. Limited book loans will be available for students who drop by the Human Library, so registration is recommended.
Challenge your assumptions! Break through your own prejudices! Participate in the Human Library. The Human Library is a global initiative founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is coordinated by the Human Library Organization. For more information, visit www.humanlibrary.org.
This event is being run as a part of Respect Week. Visit the Respect Campaign website for more information.
