Message to the Conestoga community

The following message from President John Tibbits was distributed to Conestoga students and employees on Wednesday, September 23.

It is with deep sadness that I share the news that a Conestoga student recently passed away as the result of a tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends at this difficult time.

This is a time of sorrow for our college community. As we grieve this untimely loss, I would like to remind you that a variety of services are available for students, faculty and staff. Students seeking support can contact the college’s Counselling Services team as well as Good2Talk, a free, confidential service available 24/7/365 for post-secondary students in Ontario.

Employees who require support are encouraged to engage with Homewood Health, the college’s Employee Assistance Program provider.

At Conestoga, we take great pride in providing a safe and inclusive environment where students and employees alike have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. While the specific circumstances that resulted in the loss of a promising young life pose no risk to the broader college community, I also recognize that the news is deeply unsettling.

I urge you to reach out and support one another, drawing on the strength and resilience of our caring community to help you through the difficult days ahead.

In conclusion, I offer once again my deepest personal condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends and loved ones. To respect their privacy at this time of mourning, we have made the decision to refrain from naming the student and will be providing no additional comment at this time on the circumstances that resulted in this tragic event.

Sincerely,
John Tibbits, President
