Marketing students capture another gold win at OCMC

A team of Marketing students continued Conestoga’s winning streak when they won gold at the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition (OCMC) held November 24 and 25. Conestoga hosted the competition this year which involved 250 students representing 14 colleges.

"What a team!” said faculty advisor Lisa Symons. “This group of amazing students has been working since September to be ready for this event and it showed. They represented Conestoga well, not only as competitors, but as hosts, and we are so proud of them."

The annual competition is designed to showcase the business talents of college students throughout the province. Competitors participated in a Quiz Bowl and faced 10 exercises that simulated real-world business challenges. Students had 30 minutes to read, analyze and prepare a presentation on a marketing case and present it to a panel of judges drawn from the industry.

“Conestoga's OCMC 2016 team exceeded our expectations,” added Symons. “We placed in the top 5 in many events, which seems to be our trademark way to win, demonstrating both breadth and depth.”

Conestoga also won OCMC gold in 2015; over the last 20 years the college has finished in one of the top three places 16 times.

As host for the 2016 competition, Conestoga welcomed visiting colleges on November 24 with an Oktoberfest-style keg tapping and managed logistics and planning for the event. Activities wrapped up November 25 with a reception and awards ceremony

Symons said student involvement went well beyond the team and noted the group of volunteers helping with the OCMC made the event a success.
