New mobile app promotes safe and secure campuses

For students, employees and visitors to Conestoga’s main campuses in Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo and Guelph, direct access to campus information, safety resources and emergency contacts is as close as their smartphones, thanks to a new mobile app now available for download.

Conestoga Mobile Safety is free for students, staff and visitors and is designed to work on BlackBerry, Apple and Android devices. Developed by Toronto-based company AppArmor in partnership with Conestoga’s Security Services team, the app is tailored to address the needs of our college community and connect users to a range of safety and support services.

“We are very pleased to introduce this new resource that supports Conestoga’s commitment to safe and healthy campuses,” said Kirsty Bradley-McMurtrie, director of Safety and Security.

“Conestoga Mobile Safety makes it easy for our staff and students to access the information, services and assistance they’re looking for to enhance their campus experience and protect their well-being.”

Features of Conestoga Mobile Safety include news and emergency notifications, parking information and direct links to emergency contacts. Through the app, users can connect to support resources such as the college’s Walksafe service, Counselling and Health Services as well as to the main Security and Occupational Safety offices.

A Safety Toolbox included with the app includes such features as a flashlight and personal alarm, and allows users to report suspicious activity or send their location directly to dispatchers at the Security office at any time of the day or night. Additional features and services will be developed in consultation with the Conestoga community.

Support for the development of Conestoga Mobile Safety was provided by Ontario’s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities through the Women’s Campus Safety Grant.

Conestoga is the most recent addition to a growing number of colleges and universities across Canada and around the world that have adopted the award-winning AppArmor technology to enhance safety and security for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

A comprehensive outreach initiative has been launched in conjunction with Winter Orientation activities this month to introduce the new service to potential users across the community.
