SOMAD stages surprise Flash Mob at Conestoga

Conestoga students were treated to a professionally trained flash mob courtesy of Cirque de Soleil choreographer Debra Brown on Monday, February 10.

Students in the Visual Merchandising Arts, Interior Decorating and Public Relations programs performed in the lunchtime flash mob that took place the Student Life Atrium.

Dancers performed the 2-minute routine to David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, dancing for a large crowd of curious onlookers. The purpose of the flash mob was to promote the School of Media and Design and their upcoming charity events in March.

“These students are passionate about design, they are all very creative and those who participated are passionate about our charitable causes,” said Margie Hedges, Coordinator of Design Programs at Conestoga.

On March 18, students will hold the 3rd Annual ‘Chairity’ Gala at the Waterloo Region Museum. The event will feature a silent auction of old chairs that have been redesigned by students in Conestoga’s Interior Decorating program. A live auction will feature the work of several renowned local designers and faculty. Tickets are $20 and proceeds will benefit the Special Care Nursery at Guelph General Hospital.

The 4th Annual aWEARness Runway Performance takes place on March 27 at the Waterloo Region Museum. The event features themed fashion pieces developed by students in the Visual Merchandising Arts program. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Each year, students vote for which charities their fundraising efforts will benefit. Since their inception, the two events have raised a total of more than $20,000 and benefitted charities such as the Hospice of Waterloo Region and the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
