A Framework of Essential Skills for Conestoga Students

Alongside 11 other colleges across Canada, and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, Conestoga has been participating in the Developing a National Framework for Essential Skills project (funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada). We delivered an Essential Skills upgrading program, Essentially Ready, to students in Human Resources Management, Personal Support Worker, and Career Development Practitioner programs for four months at the beginning of 2012. Preliminary results have shown that Essentially Ready was a success! All of the students showed skill gain in two out of the three Essential Skills on which they were assessed.

One of the Essentially Ready participants said:

“This program helped me to know where my strengths and weaknesses are with reading, document use and numeracy.”
