"Who would have thought I, Shirley Knowles, would welcome school supplies as part of my Christmas gift from my grandchildren?" That's right, going back to school has become a family affair in Shirley's circle. The thought of going to college was overwhelming yet rewarding. Shirley was very happy to make a career change that complimented her volunteer work at a seniors home. Shirley worked in the manufacturing field over the years. Recently Shirley became unemployed and realized she needed to make a career change or she was going to get contract work. She met with an employment advisor at a local community partner to confirm eligibility for MTCU Second Career Funding. She was referred to the Doon Career Centre to learn more about the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program where she connected with Ann Marie.
Shirley began the Personal Support Worker program at Conestoga College in January 2012. Going back to school "is a very fulfilling and rewarding time in my life" states Shirley. Having a good support system from family made the transition easier. "The teachers at the college are wonderful and I am enjoying the program immensely."
Shirley stated that she was touched when her grandchildren, Brandon, Connor, Mackenzie and Trevor bought her school supplies for Christmas. Congratulations Shirley on taking such a big step forward and being a great model for your family. All the best on your studies at Conestoga, Shirley!
