New Essential Skills Initiatives

According to Statistics Canada, 47% of Canadian workers do not possess adequate skills in three areas that are necessary for workplace safety and productivity: READING TEXT, DOCUMENT USE (e.g., reading forms) and NUMERACY. In the Conestoga Career Centre we use innovative tools such as the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) to assess and assist workers in developing these important skills.

Assessing and improving a worker's foundational or Essential Skills can contribute to better work performance, targeted training, enhanced ability to learn technical skills, employee retention, health & safety and profitability.

Conestoga College uses the TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills) assessment to work with employers to measure the skills of their workers. TOWES can be used as a tool to assess the skills of entry level employees, employees being considered for promotion or in areas where an assessment might be necessary to improve worker's skills to enhance performance or production.
