Culinary Student Wins Ontario Mushroom Competition!

Congratulations to Laura Kallay and her team who won the MAKE IT WITH MUSHROOMS - Student Chef Challenge. Laura, along with her team of Bridget Dignard and Nathan Lavoie are in the culinary arts programs at Conestoga College in Waterloo. They won first place at the final cook-off on Friday October 19th in Guelph. The team won a $1,500 scholarship, as well as an additional $1,500 donation towards the Conestoga Culinary programs.

Conestoga College participated along with 6 other Ontario college culinary programs in submitting family focused recipes using Ontario grown mushrooms. Recipes were judged on the basis of family taste appeal, ease and convenience of preparation, and nutrition. Laura’s recipes were short-listed and selected to compete in the live cook-off competition between two other colleges. Laura’s recipe and the Conestoga culinary team prevailed and were named the "Make it with Mushroom Masters".

The team was under the leadership of Conestoga’s Chef extraordinaire, Philippe Saraiva.

The competition was sponsored by Mushrooms Canada. It is an association representing mushroom growers across Canada. Their consumer website is www.mushrooms.ca
