Motive Power Sector Growing at Conestoga

Starting in September 2007, Conestoga College will offer two new programs in the motive power sector at the Guelph Heavy Equipment OperatorCampus. These post secondary programs reflect the growing interest and demand in the Auto Service and Truck and Coach areas as well as expanding the capabilities of Conestoga's new Truck and Coach Technician Centre, which opened at the campus this fall.

The full-time Motive Power Programs will consist of 16 week post secondary training, followed by 16 weeks of apprenticeship training in either Truck and Coach Technician or Automotive Service Technician. These 32 week in-college certifications will be followed by a 16 week Co-op placement. Participants will gain skills in welding, air-conditioning, schematics and drawings as well as engine, electrical, drive train and brake systems. In addition, motive power safety and WHMIS as well as communications, computer applications and applied mathematics will be covered. Students are registered apprentices from the beginning of the program.

Upon successful completion of one of these 48 week programs, participants will gain a College Certificate, Level 1 and Level 2 of Apprenticeship in-school training as well as gain on-the-job experience. To be eligible for consideration into one of our Motive Power Fundamental Programs your must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), GED or equivalent.

Automotive Service TechnicianGraduates of the program can continue in a truck and coach or automotive service apprenticeship or further training.

Also, Conestoga College, the Conestoga Heavy Construction Association and representatives of a number of the Association's member companies joined with program faculty and 15 apprenticeship students to mark the completion of training by Conestoga's first-ever class in the Heavy Equipment Operator program.
