Eighth Conestoga College Golf Classic to Recognize Bob Astley

The annual Conestoga College Golf Classic has two aims: to recognize each year outstanding community builders and leaders, and to raise funds for the advancement of excellence in skills education at the College.

This year's Classic, the eighth, takes place Tuesday, August 19 at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg, just west of Kitchener. More than 120 participants are expected for the day's golf, and more than 200 for the dinner that follows.

The honouree is Bob Astley, President of Sun Life Financial Canada, based in Waterloo. Previously, he served as President and CEO of both Clarica Life Insurance Company and its predecessor, The Mutual Group. He initially joined The Mutual Group in 1966, following his graduation from the University of Manitoba.

In addition to his career achievements, he is on the Stratford Festival Board of Directors and the Dean's Advisory Council for Wilfrid Laurier University's School of Business and Economics. He is also a Director of the Conference Board of Canada. He also served as Corporate Division Chair for Campaign K-W, the fundraising campaign for the Grand River Hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Proceeds from the 2003 Golf Classic will go towards a Conestoga College program or academic division to be selected by Bob and Judy Astley. In its history, the Golf Classic has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars in support of the advancement of skills education at the College.
