Broadcasting Program Announces Outstanding Student Achievers

Conestoga College’s three-year Broadcasting - Radio and Television program has announced its roster of outstanding students for academic year 2001-2002. In all, 13 students have earned awards – many sponsored by businesses in the broadcasting industry – totalling more than $5,000.

Here are this year’s winners:

Erica Bailey of Brantford is winner of the John Larke Memorial Award, a $500 honour sponsored by Kitchener stations CKGL- AM/CHYM-FM. The aim of the award is to acknowledge student effort and to encourage and recognize the importance of continuing career achievement through education.

Jess Brown of Kitchener is first-year winner of the $250 Announcing Award for the development and display of excellent announcing skills. CHYM-FM of Kitchener is the sponsor.

Elias Campbell of Dunsford is winner of the Pat Fitzgerald Award. This $500 honour is for the student who exemplifies motivation, goodwill, patience, consideration and understanding in relations with student colleagues. CKCO-TV of Kitchener sponsors the award.

Patricia Cardy of Cambridge is winner of the $250 CJOY/Magic FM Newsperson of the Year Award for consistently outstanding efforts and performance in a news reporting capacity. CJOY/Magic FM of Guelph is the sponsor.

Jennifer Fergusson of Kitchener is winner of two honours. The $500 CKCO Betty Thompson Memorial Bursary, sponsored by CKCO-TV of Kitchener, is for the student who best demonstrates community involvement through volunteer work. The $500 CHUM Limited Award for Excellence in Radio Programming, sponsored by the CHUM Group, goes to a student who demonstrates advanced skills in programming employing a documentary or magazine format.

Alison Gittons of Elora is winner of the $250 second-year Announcing Award sponsored by CHYM-FM of Kitchener for the development and display of excellent announcing skills.

Sacha Larson of Harrow is winner of a $500 award sponsored by SONY of Canada. It goes to a third-year student who consistently displays excellent television and video production skills.

Barry Melien of Guelph is winner of the Rogers Cable Television Award of $500, for a student volunteer or field-placement student from the program who has made a positive contribution to the quality and content of community television programming. Jeff Pagett of Kitchener is winner of the $250 Carl A. Pollock Memorial Award, sponsored by Electrohome. The honour is for a third-year student who has achieved in the first two years of study the highest academic standing.

Shannon Ryan of Sault Ste. Marie is winner of two honours. The CKCO Betty Thompson Broadcaster of the Year Award is sponsored by Kitchener television station CKCO. The $250 award recognizes outstanding undergraduate talent and commitment, as demonstrated by productivity and excellence in both programming and production. The $300 K.A. MacKenzie Memorial Award, subscribed in memory of a former broadcasting program faculty member, recognizes student achievement in the innovative use of
broadcasting technology.

Manny Singh of Cambridge is winner of the $250 Q 97.5 FM/Telemedia Broadcasting Award, sponsored by a London FM radio station. He earned the award by completing his program studies with the highest academic standing.

Taylor Surman of Kitchener is winner of one of two CJCS Creative Awards, sponsored by the Stratford radio station. The $250 award is for demonstrated creative writing ability as shown on project work.

Mike Wikholm of Dorchester is winner of one of two CJCS Creative Awards, sponsored by the Stratford radio station. The $250 award is for demonstrated creative production ability as shown on project work. Wikholm also earned a second award – the third-year Announcing Award of $250, sponsored by CHYM-FM of Kitchener, for the development and display of excellent announcing skills.


Located at the Doon campus of Conestoga in Kitchener, the three- year Broadcasting - Radio and Television program provides a broad yet detailed exposure to all elements of the broadcasting profession
– news production, reporting and editing; interviewing; technical and studio skills; marketing and sales; on-air experience; script writing; advertising and broadcast promotions; and specialized computer skills and applications.
