Continuing Education Initiative Earns Provincial Award

Each year, the senior administrators of Continuing Education operations at Ontario’s community colleges present what are known as the Conny Awards for outstanding innovations and practices in the field of part- time, adult education.

Five Conny Awards have been given for 2001, and Conestoga College has received one of them -- in the category of Web Page Design. Conestoga earned the honour for its Web site pages for use by associate faculty members.

These pages provide associate faculty with useful procedural information, notices of professional development and employment opportunities, data on the 2000 provincial survey of Continuing Education students at Ontario’s colleges, information about Conestoga’s Associate Faculty Advisory Panel, information about campus services available to them, and a means for Conestoga Continuing Education administrators to provide notices of importance. The Web site is an appropriate innovation especially because Conestoga draws many of its associate faculty from the ranks of professional practitioners in the communities the College serves -- individuals who have professional knowledge, skills and experience in many career fields, and who share this expertise by serving as part-time faculty.

Rosemary Newmaster of Sir Sandford Fleming College, who is Chair of the Heads of Continuing Education Committee, commented, "The submission of your Web site for Associate Faculty was judged by the panel to be exemplary and unique.”

Other Conny Award winners were Seneca College, in Exemplary Practices, for its development of multiple registration paths for part-time students to enrol; Niagara College, in Marketing, for its part-time course catalogue; and Loyalist and Mohawk Colleges, co-winners in the Programming category -- Loyalist for its courses in diabetes education, management and care, and Mohawk for its distance education courses featuring instruction in the Braille language.
