Definitions of mental health are changing. It used to be that a person was considered to have good mental health simply if they showed no signs or symptoms of a mental illness. But in recent years, there has been a shift towards a more holistic approach to mental health.

Today, we recognize that good mental health is not just the absence of mental illness. Nor is it absolute – some people are more mentally healthy than others, whether you are mentally ill or not. These realizations are prompting a new kind of focus on mental health that identifies components of mental wellness and mental fitness and explore ways to encourage them. -CMHA

World Suicide Prevention Day is held on September 10 each year as an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO)

The WHO estimates that one million people die in the world each year by suicide. These figures represent an annual world mortality rate from suicide of 14.5 per 100 000 population. The reality is that every minute there are two more deaths by suicide.

The early identification of risk factors and appropriate treatment of these conditions is an important strategy for preventing suicide.

If you are feeling suicidal during office hours, come to Counselling (1A101) immediately. After hours, access assistance at the Mobile Crisis Team, 519-744-1813 or 1-866-366-4566 or go to the nearest emergency department at the hospital nearest you (see Emergency Contacts - Community)

New students are welcomed to join the committee, which meets bi-weekly or once a month (depending on the time of year) for an hour or so through until April. The committee assists in the planning, organization and implementation of various Respect initiatives including Random Acts of Kindness Day (November) and Respect Week (March), and facilitate the Respect Campaign display booth - if willing - at various times and various events throughout the year.
