RIG Talks: ROS 101 - Modern Approach to Software in Robotics

November 26, 2015

Doon Campus

Robotics Innovation Group (RIG) extends an invitation to students, faculty, staff, and the public to attend the first talk in a new series called RIG Talks.

Robot Operating System (ROS) has become the new standard in creating cutting-edge robotics thanks to extreme flexibility, an open source approach, and a large community of world-class developers.

This talk will present a quick overview of ROS and its strengths, and demonstrations of behaviour. Anyone interested in robotics should become familiar with ROS, as it greatly increases development speed and prevents constant recreation of code.

For an introduction to RIG, please refer to the article, Group inspires innovation outside the classroom.

Speaker:

Ilia Baranov, Senior Electrical Designer at Clearpath Robotics.

Ilia Baranov graduated from University of Waterloo with a degree in electrical engineering in 2013. Robotics and automation has been lifelong interests for him.

Ilia is active within the open source robotics community, helping maintain multiple packages, and is the creator of the popular ROS 101 blog series. He is the managing engineer of the PR2 support team and leads the technical demonstration group. Ilia holds two patents related to mobile communications and ran successfully-licensed technology from a business venture.

He will often take the Swiss Army knife approach to a problem, where the faster and most versatile solution is preferred to the project solution.

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Location:

Conestoga College, Doon Campus, 299 Doon Valley Drive, Main Building, Room 2A301
