Sharing Life Lessons - a Family Story

Bob Borutski was well into his career, working for BF Goodrich Tires. He was just beginning to think about what he might do after he retired. While on vacation in Mexico, he met several people who were attending a conference covering the gas technician field. What Bob heard sounded interesting and when he returned home, he explored schools in the area that offered the course. He was impressed with the reputation of Conestoga College in providing a stable and secure learning environment. Bob’s life plan changed suddenly with the unexpected closing of his plant. He soon found himself without work and uncertain about his future. His investigation into the Gas Technician course proved timely. It was appealing because it was something he could complete quickly. It didn’t require years of training to finish. Through the Second Career initiative and with the support of Conestoga College, Bob enrolled in the Gas Technician Course.

“I was a little scared at first...was I too old to go back to school?”

According to Bob, his sentiment was unfounded. He was impressed by the breadth of learning the course offered and discovered students of all ages in his class.

“I wish I took this course when I was 20 years old”; he said.

Through the course, Bob learned about simple circuits, pumps and motors, reading blueprints, plumbing, welding, electrical, and water heaters. He said it provided a great foundation with learning in many areas that were valuable to everyday life. Bob also appreciated the flexibility of taking his courses during the winter months allowing him to run his seasonal business during the warm weather. Bob found the experience so personally valuable that he guided his son, Alex into the course.

Alex is now close to completing the requirements for Gas Technician and shares a similar perspective to Bob.

“ The in-class environment is great ; you have fun in class, gain hands-on experience and make some good friends while here”.

Alex aspires to becoming an electrician and both he and his father view the Gas Technician course opening doors of opportunity. For Bob, after completing the course he has found employment within Building Maintenance, an avenue he never would have envisioned prior to taking the course. For Alex, who is just about to begin his employment search; he says “the course has provided a foot in the door and with Conestoga College on your resume it’s like an added bonus getting you in to see employers”.

To those currently considering taking the course; Bob says,

“I’d advise anyone to take this course. You learn so much. Whether you want to become a Gas Technician, have an interest in refrigeration or want to become an electrician, it provides a good foundation to get you started.”

The people at Conestoga College wish Bob & Alex continuing success and thank you for sharing your story.
